Let the games begin

Think back to the best party you’ve ever attended.

Chances are, it wasn’t the decorations or even the cake that made it unforgettable — it was the moment your friends doubled over laughing during a game, or the chaos of a gift exchange that didn’t quite go according to plan.

That’s the kind of moment Britni Vigil has made a career out of.

“I’ve always believed that the best memories come from the small moments, when people are having fun together, not stressing over the details,” says Britni, founder of Play Party Plan, a party planning blog that’s helped millions of people throw easier, more joyful events.

What started out as a passion project in 2013 back when Britni had just welcomed her first child has since become a most beloved source for party games, themed printables, delicious recipes, and party ideas for every occasion.

“I was looking for connection,” she says. “Blogging helped me find a community of creative women, and I quickly realized other people were looking for the same kinds of ideas I was sharing.”

One of her earliest posts — New Year’s Eve party games — unexpectedly went viral. “Suddenly people were emailing me saying, ‘We played your game and our family loved it!’ That’s when I knew this could be something more than a hobby.”

From day one, Britni was committed to keeping her content free — especially her printables. “People tell me all the time they have a limited budget for planning events,” she says. “So I make things they can download for free, print at home, and use right away.”

But making content free doesn’t mean it’s free to produce. As Play Party Plan gained traction, Britni needed a way to support both her family and her growing business. That’s when she turned to ads.

“Ads allow me to keep my content free while still being able to afford the costs of creating original content and making a living to support my family,” she says. “It’s a model that works for me and my community.”

Fast forward to today and ads now account for the majority of her website’s revenue. She started with Google AdSense, eventually switching over to Raptive, a Google Certified Publishing Partner that helps creators with their ad revenue so that folks like Britni can focus on what they do best: content creation.

Parties powered by family

Now a full-fledged business, Play Party Plan draws millions of monthly visitors. And it remains a family effort in the truest sense.

Britni’s husband and sister are full-time team members, helping with recipe development, brainstorming, and video production. Extended family and friends pitch in as well when needed — even her kids get in on the fun, testing new games before they hit the blog.

“We test everything before we share it,” Britni says. “And if our family doesn’t enjoy it, it gets thrown out or goes back to the drawing board for tweaks and more testing. If it’s not good enough for our family, it’s not good enough to be shared with others.

That testing process led to one of her biggest hits too: a dice-based gift exchange game that went viral during the holidays. “Now it’s everywhere,” she says. “I love that something I created is part of people’s holiday traditions.”

That kind of impact is what keeps Britni going. “I get emails all the time from people who’ve used our games for birthdays, retirements, Christmas, all these special moments with their loved ones,” she says.

And while many of her readers are women planning birthdays or baby showers, Play Party Plan also welcomes senior center activity directors, church group leaders, and youth volunteers. What connects them all? A desire to bring people together in fun and easy ways.

A decade in, Britni Vigil is still doing what she set out to do: helping people plan meaningful moments. And she’s doing it while supporting her family — all from a business built on laughter and family (plus ads).

“When I think about what I’m most proud of, it’s not the traffic or even the viral games,” Britni says. “It’s that I’ve built something that brings people together in living rooms, classrooms, and backyards all over the country.”

That’s not just party planning. That’s community building.

For Britni, that means there’s always another game to play, another party to plan, another moment waiting to be shared.
